Bagabag, Nueva Vizcaya (May 23) -- The local government unit here has purchasedf a back hoe which will be used for the repair of irrigation systems in this town as one of the priority projects of the municipality here.
"We only have one national irrigation system in our town that is why we would like to undertake rehabilitation of other communal irrigation systems to sufficiently help our farmers specially those affected by the drought," said mayor Nestor Sevillena.
He said they have purchased a P2.1 million-worth of back hoe to carry out rehabilitation efforts for damaged irrigation systems to help farmers who were badly affected by the El Nino phenomenon.
According to Sevillena, at least three communal irrigation systems are targeted for repair in the municipality which, when restored fully will boost the agricultural productivity of local farmers.
Farmers in this town who depend on rice and corn farming comprise 80 percent of the local population.
Earlier, the local government unit here has declared itself under state of calamity due to the damage brought by the drought.
Sevillena said the rehabilitation efforts will complement the fuel and fertilizer subsidies which were earlier given to farmers.
"While we are waiting for the assistance of the national government, we deemed it necessary to act based on the availability of our resources to help farmers cope up with their loses," he said.
The mayor also added that repair and improvement of several farm-to-market roads in this municipality will also be implemented this year to provide easy access for farmers in transporting their products to the market. (PIA NVizcaya) [top]
