Region 8 celebrates International Day for Biodiversity
Tacloban City (May 24) -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources spearheaded the celebration of International Day for Biodiversity through a series of simple but meaningful activities on May 22.
DENR Regional Executive Director Primitivo C. Galinato, Jr. informed that the Protected Areas, Wildlife and Coastal Management Service conducted an interactive exhibit on biodiversity at the DENR Regional Office compound.
A lecture series on International Day for Biodiversity for Development and Poverty Alleviation was also conducted at the DENR Regional Office. On May 22, the official video of the International Day for Biodiversity was aired at a local television.
RED Galinato said that May 22 of every year is a day for international attention for biological biodiversity and its links to human concerns. In 2010, the International Day for Biodiversity is devoted to biodiversity and development. The focus for this year's celebration revolves on the theme "Biodiversity for Development and Poverty Alleviation."
In his message for the International Day for Biodiversity, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that the planet's species and habitats, and the goods and services they provide, form the basis for the world's wealth, health and well-being.
However, despite repeated global commitments to protect this heritage, the variety of life on Earth continues to decline at an unprecedented rate.
Biodiversity loss is moving ecological systems ever closer to a tipping point beyond which they will no longer be able to fulfill their vital functions, the UN Secretary General added.
This year's celebration has been made more significant as the United Nations has designated 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity with the end in view of bringing greater international attention to bear on the issue of the continued loss of biodiversity. (PIA 8) [top]
