Samar Brigada Eskwela plus kicks off

By Ninfa B Quirante

Catbalogan City (24 May) -- To prepare for the coming school year, the Department of Education (DepEd) Samar Division?s Brigada Eskwela kicked off in two opposite directions, today.

One In Clarencio Calagos Memorial School in Sta Margarita, Samar from the north led by Assistant Division Superintendent Bernardo Adina while another group of Dep Ed officials is led by Schools Division Superintendent Alfredo Dacurro in Basey 2 Central Elementary School in Basey, Samar.

The two groups will hop from school to school to monitor Brigada activities, and will converge in the afternoon at Mercedes Elementary School in Catbalogan City.

Brigada Eskwela is an annual campaign to prepare the schools for one whole week from today up to May 28, 2010.

In Catbalogan 1 Central Elementary School, the band of teachers and parents are Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE) amounting to billions of pesos. This year, the DepEd is busy trying to restore the classrooms for some 2, 300 pupils based on the last school year?s enrolment.

In a brief interview with the principal, Ms Nicefora Diaz, she said that the rooms are being repainted and repaired with the parents and teachers own fund plus the help of DepEd?s Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE) fund.

In the past years, she said that the local government unit of Catbalogan has also assisted them in Brigada activities.

When asked why attached the word plus, a DepEd official said that apart from the quantifiable resources Brigada has giuven DepEd, it has also attracted the spirit of volunteerism like when parents offer to prepare snacks for those who are painting and other carpentry jobs.

The Brigada Eskwela plus aims to pool stakeholders in education and their resources to help DepED and the teachers prepare the schools so that regular classes will be done when the students return to school on June 15, 2010. (PIA-Samar) [top]
