May 28 is National Flag Day

Roxas City (27 May) -- The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) is urging both the public and the private sectors to proudly display the flag not just outside their offices but also outside their homes.
The observance of the Flag Day every May 28 is a prelude to the celebration of the country's independence day every June 12.
NHCP executive director Ludovico Badoy said that the flag day commemorates the Battle of Alapan where the Philippine flag was first hoisted at Teatro Caviteno by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo in 1898.
Aguinaldo conceived and designed the Philippine flag and asked Marcela Agoncillo, wife of another Filipino patriot Felipe Agoncillo, to make the flag together with her daughter, Lorenza, who at the time was only seven years old, and a niece of national hero Jose P. Rizal, Delfina Herbosa Natividad.
The flag day observance is stipulated in Proclamation No. 374 issued by President Diosdado Macapagal in 1965.
By Executive Order No. 179 of President Fidel Ramos issued on May 24, 1994, the Philippine National Flag shall be on display in all public buildings, government institutions and official residences from May 24 to June 12. (PIA) [top]
