Tuguegarao City (27 May) -- The Commission on Higher Education Regional Office 2 (CHEDRO 2) recently said that its officials are currently conducting monitoring activities to determine the schools that have implemented tuition fee hike despite CHEd chairman Emmanuel Angeles assurance that no private school or state university/college (SUC) will implement tuition fee increase for this school year.
CHEDRO 2 director Evelyn Pascua said some higher education institutions have signified their intentions to increase tuition fees." We have yet to check whether they will push through with their plans", she added.
Pascua said they have to find out whether these schools sought the CHEd's approval and if they went through consultation process with the students, parents and faculty members.
Consultations must be initiated by school heads and be conducted not later than February 28 prior to the Academic Year (AY) the intended increase shall take effect.
To avoid complaints, all parties should come up with a unified decision, Pascua added.
The CHED memorandum no. 14 requires that 70 per cent of the proceeds to be derived from the tuition increase shall be used for the payment of increase in salaries, wages, allowances and other benefits of its teaching and non-teaching personnel and other staff except those who are principal stockholders of the HEI.
Pascua stressed that they will also monitor the collection of other fees in addition to tuition saying these should go to the purposes or services they are intended.
The lady director likewise stressed that in the case of State Colleges and Universities (SUC's), they have the power to fix tuition and other necessary school charges, however they are enjoined to undertake the same processes. (PIA 2) [top]
