DA fears more damage on corn

Tuguegarao City (27 May) -- Cagayan Valley Agriculture Regional Executive Director Andrew Villacorta has expressed fears that 27,000 hectares of corn which were planted early by farmers might be damaged due to lack of rain.
Villacorta said several farmers have already planted corn in the first week of May after the series of rains experience in the last week of April, but after the few days of rains, cornfields again experience severe drought.
In some parts, Villacorta said the pump engines which were distributed to some farmers during the El Nino phenomenon in the first quarter of this year will be utilized to water the planted corn; however, not all farmers were recipients of the water pump engines.
"We have more than 5,000 water pump engines which were distributed to farmers and supposed to be retrieved to use it for high value commercial crops but because of the early planters, we will let them use some of the pumps to save their plants", Villacorta said.
Other than this, DA is planning to conduct cloud seeding to produce water to Magat Dam to be utilized to water irrigated plants in the lower part of the region.
"We need to elevate the water level of Magat Dam into 165 cu. meter to have enough water to be released for our plants", Villacorta said.
However, Villacorta said if there will be enough rains in the first weeks of June, then the agricultural products may be saved. (PIA 2) [top]
