Bayanihan spirit very much alive at DepEd's Brigada Eskwela program
Tacloban City (May 29) -- The Department of Education's Brigada Eskwela Program which started on May 24 until May 28, is a showcase of the Bayanihan spirit of the Filipino people.
A community of people, education stakeholders, helping one another in order to prepare the school for the coming school opening on June 15 - the scenario is replicated in each DepEd school in the Region. Several people were tooled with cleaning equipments; others were repainting the walls, while others were making some repairs to make the classrooms more habitable.
Brigada Eskwela volunteers during Brigada Eskwela help public schools by welding broken fences, fixing leaking roofs, cleaning clogged drainages and potential breeding grounds of mosquitoes, replace busted lighting fixtures and switches, repaint old walls and ceilings, clean school grounds and spruce up school gardens.
Parents especially came to help clean the schools. At times students came to help their parents, they were welcomed to do so, but this is not a prerequisite for enrolment. Some people gave donations in cash or in kind, but the spirit of contributing to a community endeavor is still there.
Through the Brigada Eskwela, DepEd is not only able to achieve its aim of generating support from all sectors of society, it is also helping preserve a very positive Filipino trait, that of the Bayanihan spirit.
As Education Secretary Mona Valisno said, "Brigada Eskwela aims to unify the community in making our public schools conducive for learning, and is a perfect venue for all education stakeholders to put into practice the Bayanihan spirit."
Indeed, "Brigada Eskwela teaches sincere community effort to prepare the public schools for school opening, and to give the public school children a learning environment that they rightfully deserve."
Brigada Eskwela is part of DepEd's annual Oplan Balik Eskwela, which aims to prepare public schools for school opening. All education stakeholders are urged to do minor repairs of school furniture and other masonry works, and donate construction and cleaning materials to public schools. (PIA 8) [top]
