PIA Press Release

Maasin City gets award for no smoking campaign

By Bong Pedalino

Maasin City (Jun 2) -- This city's serious efforts at enforcing a real no smoking drive -- where stickers on this subject are everywhere, even showing grim graphics on the bad effects of cigarette or tobacco smoke -- have reached the attention of the health authorities.

During yesterday's observance of World No Tobacco Day (May 31), City Mayor Maloney Samaco received the deserving recognition, dubbed Red Orchid Award, from the Department of Health (DOH) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Speaking live over the phone in the city-paid program over dyDM this morning, Samaco, who is in Manila, said he shared the honor with those who cooperated for the success of the program.

All the city government want in its anti-smoking program is to spread awareness on the health benefits of quitting smoking, and the financial savings that goes with it, he added.

Out of the many local government units nationwide, only five were given the recognition -- two municipalities and three cities.

PIA, however, was unable to take note of the other four LGUs as the monitor got static the precise moment the Mayor mentioned them.

The anti-smoking campaign was implemented in the city through the Healthy City Enforcers and a Task Force.

Among the first to be subjected to the program, which began last year, were city hall employees who are chain smokers.

It was learned that out of 60 employee-smokers, a total of ten had quit smoking for good so far, while many were able to reduce the number of cigarette sticks smoked in a day.

Smoking in public places in the city has been banned ever since the campaign began. (PIA-Southern Leyte) [top]
