Farmers get organic fertilizers from OPA
Negros Occ. (2 June) -- More than 450 farmers here received 1,665 bags of organic fertilizers last year from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, OPA, in an effort to boost their income and persuade them to shift into organic farming.
The office also apprehended 2,308.50 Metric Tons of GMO corn and conducted 32 Information Campaigns related to the banning of entry of GMO in the province as it strengthens its stand as an organic province armed by a law.
Records from the OPA further showed that it conducted 1,068 soil analysis to 942 clients.
Negros Occ. anti-GMO stance became controversial last year when some board members and certain sectors aired disadvantages of the law while others defended it and insisted the GMO ban should stay.
Meanwhile, the province is also stepping up its sustainable fisheries program by dispersing 125,396 tilapia fingerlings to small farmers in the province in 2009.
Towards this end, it conducted eight trainings for Bantay Dagat members.
A total of 25 data base was established to 25 cities and municipalities to strengthen its coastal fisheries and resource management program. (PIA-LOL) [top]
