Ibanag terms to be used to name RGC streets

Tuguegarao City (2 June) -- To showcase a part of the distinct cultural heritage, the dialect, of this city, the Regional Government Center Management Committee (RGCMC) has approved a scheme to name the streets within the Regional Government Center using Ibanag terms for Filipino values and social concepts.
NEDA Regional Director Milagros Rimando said the scheme considers the culture of the host LGU notwithstanding the fact that the center houses government agencies with a regional coverage.
She said many Filipinos lament the fact that some indigenous cultural values and practices are fast disappearing. The uniqueness of the Ibanag culture, she said, has been diluted and is gradually eroding in the wake of the sweeping socio-economic and cultural changes.
The Ibanag terms for the road which is called "dalan" will be known as; Dalan na Pagayaya (happiness), Dalan na Marayao (respectful), Dalan na Meddu (Caring), Dalan na Paccorofun (friendship), Dalan na Imammo (peace), Dalan na Angicacua (Courtesy), Dalan na Pappabalo (thankfulness), Dalan na Mataggu (Brave), Dalan na Pattaradday (Unity), Dalan na Manono (Maturity), Dalan na Maisppo (kind), Dalan na Kamaranan (Nobility), Dalan na Malappo (industrious), Dalan na Matunung (righteous).
"It may be difficult for non-Ibanag speakers to pronounce the terms but this should not serve as a constraint to adopt the scheme or to negate the uniqueness and the other merits of the proposal in the light of its strong cultural undertones", Rimando added.
She believes that the development scheme of the RGC is consistent and rooted in the Filipino culture in general and with the culture of the host LGU in particular. (PIA 2) [top]
