Cauayan City, Isabela (June 2) -- The National Irrigation Administration-Magat River Integrated Irrigation System (NIA-MIRIIS) has started releasing water yesterday (June 1) from the reservoir to be used by farmers in tilling their farmlands.
Earlier, NIA-MRIIS Operations Manager Mariano Dancel said that they have postponed the release of water which should be on May 27, 2010 but moved on June 1, 2010 due to low level of water inside the reservoir that time.
As of press time, the water level has gone up to 165 meters and has inflow of 30 cubic meters per second.
The NIA management decided to start releasing waters but on a minimal level of 20 cubic meter per second for irrigation purposes and farmers would already start land preparations for the cropping season.
This would also allow the reservoir raise more level in order to fill the necessary volume of water in the reservoir.
Dancel wipe out fears of farmers that the dam might not supply the needed water of farmlands during the cropping season.
Dancel hopes that in the coming weeks more rains will fall in the watershed areas of Magat dam.
With the start of water release in the dam, the power firm based in Magat Dam (SN Aboitiz) will initially start producing power through its power turbine. (PIA Isabela) [top]
