LGU, community to oppose logging in Conner
Conner, Apayao (4 June) -- Attempts to establish logging concessions in this municipality will likely fail with the peoples' vigilance on the imposition of "no logging policy".
According to two veteran local legislators of this town, no logging will be permitted to operate here since the local government unit (LGU) is geared to protect the remaining forests.
Three -terms Sangguniang Bayan member Jose Hortelano said that since their incumbency, logging concessionaires who tried to log in Conner were always turned down.
"The people in communities whose forests lands are targeted for logging vehemently oppose moves of logging companies. Because of that unwavering stand in the grassroot level, we are supporting them," said Hortelano who is recently elected Board Member for District 1.
According to Hortelano, a certain Furniture Groups Incorporated (FGI) is interested to extract wood in commercial volume but was turned down by the communities and the LGU.
On the other hand, re-elected Sanguniang Bayan Nicholas Abawag aired the same commitment to rid Conner from commercial logging since the forest lands logged three decades ago have not yet fully recovered into at least a second growth forest.
He said part of their legislative agenda is to impose stiffer laws against commercial logging. "With Leonardo Dangoy as the new chief executive of Conner LGU, any attempt of logging companies to operate has to pass the eye of the needle," Abawag said. (PIA) [top]
