DOLE gives assistance to El Nino-affected farmers
Tanudan, Kalinga (4 June) -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) provincial office distributed 20 rolls of PBC-water hose and 15 units of shovel to 34 farmers of Barangay Anggacan, this town.
Lourdes Canseco of DOLE-Kalinga said the assistance is under the department's special program intended to farmers affected by the El Nino dry spell.
The tools and equipments amounting to P60,250 were handed over last week at the DOLE provincial office to Barangay Captain Robert Pinangga and Tanudan PESO Josephine Amangao.
This is part of government's multi-agency assistance to farmers whose rice, coffee and other high-value crops suffered heavy losses from the El Nino, Canseco said.
The program is tied-up with local government units which provide the list of affected farmers and the extent of damages incurred.
Also included in the requirements of the program are profile of affected farmers, certification of damages by Municipal Agriculture Officers (MAOS) and project proposals indicating what kind of assistance are needed by affected farmers in the area. The project proposal should be related to the rehabilitation efforts from the El Nino, Canseco stressed.
Tanudan is one of seriously affected by long absence of rain based on reports of the Provincial Agriculture Office.
Although the El Nino period is about to pass, affected farmers are encouraged to catch-up with the assistance provided they submit the necessary requirements, Canseco said. Larry Lopez(PIA-Kalinga) [top]
