DepEd Butuan challenges teachers thru seminar workshop on environmental education

By Jennifer P. Gaitano

Butuan City (9 June) -- The Department of Education (DepEd) Butuan City Division conducted a 2-day Division Seminar Workshop on Environmental Education to all public teachers in this city on June 8-9, 2010 at the Division Training Center, here.

During its first day of workshop on Tuesday, June 8, Ms. Juliet Paler, City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Environmental Management Specialist discussed the "State of the Philippines? Environment: Challenges and Opportunities in the next 100 years" highlighting the Solid Waste Management.

Paler said that there is a link between garbage and global warming. "60% of greenhouse gases are result of individual consumers worldwide?we are the collective case of anthropogenic (human-produced) global warming," she said.

Paler also emphasized that the society should act now by planning and preparing for the future.

Paler further said that that people should not depend on what the government can do; it must come from building social discipline, harnessing our communities, and inputs from the concerned sectors.

Also, DepEd Butuan City Education Supervisor for Science - Dr. Lidwina Calo, tackled the "Ecological Waste Management".

Dr. Calo cited examples on how to recycle materials that can still be sold out to the market. "We can always make our city the cleanest among other cities if we will just move and act on it," said Calo.

Dr. Calo ended her discussion by saying ? "Let us be the change agents in our city, our very own Butuan City".

Meanwhile, PIA-Caraga shared a 63-minutes video presentation on the impact of Climate Change to people and environment.

On its second day of workshop, a resource speaker from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Caraga is expected to discuss the topic - "Road to Copenhagen to Mexico: Speaking Global Agreement to Address the Impact of Climate Change", while Butuan City Vice Mayor Dino Claudio Sanchez will discuss the "Good Practices in Environmental Planning".

With this initiative, DepEd is optimistic that all teachers as information agents to its students will share the information and discuss it thoroughly especially that classes will start this month. (PIA-Caraga) [top]
