PIA Press Release

No rice shortage in Zamboanga Norte, says NFA

Dipolog (9 June) -- "Our rice stock is enough to cover six-month supply for the people of Zamboanga del Norte."

This was the statement of National Food Authority (NFA) Provincial Manager Cerilo Polinar when interviewed during a "Kapihan" radio program over RPN-dxKD recently.

According to Polinar, the rice stocks in the NFA warehouses in Liloy and Siocon towns and in the four warehouses in Dipolog City are more than enough to cover the rice consumption of the province for the next six months. He even said that "this does not include the continuous arrival of rice supply from Zamboanga City and Cebu."

Presently the NFA provincial office has 296,000 sacks of rice at its disposal excluding the 32,000 sacks that arrived through the Pulauan Port in Dapitan and the 16,000 sacks delivered to Siocon town.

In a related development, Polinar disclosed that the NFA in coordination with the city/municipal social welfare and development offices has started distributing rice assistance to families affected by the El Niņo phenomenon in the province.

Polinar said a number of municipalities in the first district of the province have already started receiving rice allocation for El Niņo victims in the area.

Under the said rice allocation program, the beneficiaries would each be given one sack of rice from the NFA.

The beneficiaries were identified by the city/municipal social welfare and development offices with the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) handling the distribution.

Polinar, however, disclosed that only 14 towns and two cities have submitted their list of beneficiaries, thus far. His office is still awaiting the listing from other towns.

The breakdown of beneficiaries by city/municipality is as follows: Dapitan City ? 2,277; Dipolog City ? 1,536; La Libertad ? 392; Labason ? 2,867; Liloy ? 2,636; Mutia ? 737; Piņan ? 1,198; Polanco ? 2,084; Rizal - 593; Salug ? 2,075; Sibutad ? 798; Siocon ? 2,034; Sirawai ? 2,272; and Tampilisan ? 1,493.

Based on the number of beneficiaries submitted by the local government units, the NFA is going to release 23,767 sacks of rice for the purpose.

Polinar clarified that such rice assistance is given one time to every beneficiary and its distribution is until June 30 only.

The municipalities of Piņan, La Libertad and Sibutad have already received their rice allocations. (PF/PIA-ZN) [top]
