Davao Region students grab grand prize in DAR's mural painting contest

by Melvia J. Malubay

Davao City (11 June) -- Five students representing each province in the region won the grand prize in the 2010 nationwide mural painting contest spearheaded by the Department of Agrarian Reform last week of May in celebration of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law this month.

The student-delegates represented DAR Region XI to the mural painting contest held in Manila, which was anchored on the theme, "Buhay sa Bukid ay Masaya kung may Sipag at Pag-aaruga."

Renz Marion Lerog, Bea Trizia Jimenez, Abegail Tolentino, Jay-ar Meode and Bernie Ladaran brought home a trophy and P150,000.00 cash.

DAR XI's entry bested other groups from the 10 regions in the entire country. Region 1 won the second place while Region 4A got the third place.

All entries were painted on 8 x 12 feet canvass for two and a half days at the Quezon Memorial Circle. The awarding ceremony was held at the DAR Central Office Gymnasium on May 28, 2010. The contest was sponsored by Boysen Paints.

DAR XI Regional Director Datu Yusoph B. Mama said this victory gave an honor to the region as this is the first time in so many years that it won in a national competition.

He also said this event has challenged the youth to bring out their talents and skills in art, through painting their understanding on how the department and its programs changed the lives of the farmers as well as fostering economic advancement in the countryside.

The contest was spearheaded by the DAR Central Office in Manila through the Public Affairs Staff as part of the continuing social marketing program of the department.

All entries will become properties of the DAR to be used in documentation, promotion and exhibition purposes with no additional compensation to the contestants. (PIA XI-DAR XI) [top]
