OWWA 2 spearheads Migrant Workers Day celebration

Tuguegarao City (June 18) -- The Cagayan Valley Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA 2) in collaboration with the different national and local government, non-government offices, private institutions and the media has spearheaded the celebration of the Migrant Workers Day last June 7, 2010 at the CSU Gymnasium here.
Dubbed as "Araw ng Pasasalamat", the celebration aimed to give honor and pay tribute to the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) for their invaluable contribution to the economic development of the country.
The one-day celebration was started with a mass and followed by a simple program which featured the awarding of outstanding OFWs and stakeholders, scholarship grants, raffle draws and cultural presentations.
The messages of Sec. Marianito D. Roque of the Department of labor and Employment (DOLE) and OWWA Administrator Carmelita S. Dimzon which were read by OWWA 2 director Robert Bassig and and DOLE 2 assistant director Elpidio Atal, Jr. were also featured.
Both Roque and Dimzom have underscored the unity and support of the OFWs that contributed much in the country's battle against the Global Economic Crisis.
Dimzon said it is but fitting to give tribute to the OFWs because of the excellence they have shown in their work that continues to give honor to the country.
On the other hand, Roque vowed to further strengthen the DOLE's mandate for a better service for the OFWs and their families as well as the protection of their rights, interests and welfare.
The event was also highlighted by a motorcade around the major street of the city which was participated by the delegates from the Cagayan, Isabela, and Nueva Vizcaya.
Some products of the beneficiaries under the Filipino Expatriates livelihood Support fund and OFW Family Circles/Association were also displayed in the livelihood and trade fair held at the CSU ground.
Through the coordination of the Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Board and the Department of Trade and Industry, a diskwento fair was also held where school supplies and food products were sold at discounted prices.
This year's Migrant Workers Day celebration was sponsored by the Land bank of the Philippines, Banco de Oro, Supermalls and the Globe Telecommunications. (PIA 2) [top]
