July is Disaster Consciousness Month
Baguio City (19 June) -- The month of July is observed as the National Disaster Consciousness Month (NDCM).This year's theme is "Pag Alerto, Malayo Sa Peligro".
Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) Cordillera Regional Director Olive Luces said there are various activities lined up to create public awareness and preparedness against natural hazards such as typhoons that cause flooding and landslides, earthquake that cause collapsed buildings, homes and structures.
The OCD in partnership with various agencies will be conducting fire drills and earthquake drills in different schools and government offices to assess the awareness and preparedness of the public in case of calamities.
A Disaster Risk Management (DRM) on skills training program in first aid and proper use of fire extinguisher and a school orientation on how to conduct earthquake drill are also lined up, Luces said.
"We should always be ready with any eventuality. What goes around, comes around", Luces said.
The highlight of the DCM is the National Gawad KALASAG (KAlamidad at Sakuna Labanan, SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan) Awarding Ceremony. This is the National Disaster Coordinating Council's recognition scheme to acknowledge outstanding Disaster Coordinating Councils, private or volunteer organizations, individuals, and government emergency responders that are involved in the implementation of disaster management programs and projects.
The regional winner of the KALASAG is the Baguio Benguet Public Information and Civic Action Group (BBPICAG) and will represent the region in the national search together with second placer Philex Mining Corporation Benguet.
Meanwhile, members of the Cordillera Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (CRDCC) will have a tree planting activity in celebration of the Disaster Consciousness Month.
The CRDCC is the policy making and coordinating body for disaster management. It remains actively focused on carrying out the government's notable efforts and programs on disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and rehabilitation.
It also serves as an advisory body on disaster preparedness programs, disaster operations and rehabilitation efforts undertaken by the government and other stakeholders, Luces added. Joseph B Zambrano(PIA) [top]
