DOH reminds public vs child injury, food safety

by Lito Dar

Baguio City (19 June) -- With students back in school, the Department of Health is advocating Child Injury Prevention and Control programs.

Department of Health (DOH) Regional Operations Division Family Health Cluster Head, Dr. Virginia Narciso reminded the public to be wary of child injury prevention. Child injury, she said, is among the top 10 causes of child morbidity and mortality.

?We have to work together in ensuring that our children are living in a safe home, community and going to safe schools to lessen the incidence of injuries like road accidents, burns, falls, or poisoning, among others', Narciso said.

She stressed the need to instill preventive intervention, not only by the DOH, but also the parents, the community, local government units, other government agencies like the Department of Education, Department of Social Welfare and Development and other concerned agencies or groups.

Dr Narciso also called on the strict monitoring of food establishments and ambulant vendors. According to Narciso, we have to ensure the cleanliness of food preparation, to ensure that our children and the public as well, will not be victims of food poisoning, diarrhea and other water borne diseases.

Narciso also reminded the public to instill in the minds of their school children the importance of personal hygiene habit like proper hand washing, proper spacing in crowded area and covering their mouth when coughing in sneezing, to avoid food poisoning and acquisition or transfer of illnesses or diseases.

With the onset of rainy season, Narciso also warned the public against dengue. She reiterated to always remember the 4S campaign against Dengue, which is to Seek and destroy mosquito breeding grounds; Seek early medication and don't self medicate; Self protection and Say no to indiscriminate fogging.

In line with the DOH Dengue Awareness Program, the Center for Health and Development (CHD-CAR) launched its Dengue Control and Prevention program at the La Trinidad Municipal gymnasium last June 17. (PIA) [top]
