50T bags of certified seeds available for Western Visayas farmers
Iloilo City (21 June) -- There are 50,516 bags of certified rice seeds that are available for farmers in Western Visayas this wet season, especially those affected by the El Nino phenomenon as of June 16, 2010, according to the Department of Agriculture 6.
Under the seed subsidy, El Nino affected farmers can avail of a bag of inbred certified seeds for P600.00 and for hybrid seeds for P1,000 until September 15.
These certified seeds are produced by the seed growers in the region who have undergone training on cultural management practices, pest management and seedbed preparation.
Currently, there are 470 accredited seed growers in Region VI with 3,233 hectares as accredited seed production area.
The seed subsidy is part of the continuing efforts of the DA to mitigate the adverse impact of the dry spell among farmers so that they can recover losses incurred and to encourage them to use certified seeds in order to increase their production.
As of mid-June this year, DA 6 Director Larry Nacionales said in a press report that around 68,861 bags of inbred certified seeds have been distributed for the whole region or 58 percent of the 118,276 bags targeted for the wet season cropping, covering both rainfed and irrigated areas.
Of the 68,861 bags of inbred certified seeds distributed, Iloilo availed of the most with 38,882 bags followed by Capiz with 10,000, Negros Occidental with 8,350, Antique with 5,413, Guimaras with 4,083, and Aklan with 2,133.
The seed subsidy was implemented in the region on March 16 of this year. (DA/PIA) [top]
