DILG to losing Liga seat contenders: Give it up
Tagbilaran City (27 June) -- Instead of contesting the controversial result of the special elections to replace the Liga ng Mga Barangay president and Vice President, Interior and Local Government Regional Director Pedro Naval Jr advises to contenders: give it up.
After the Liga alleged irregular elections last Saturday, comments on the air-lanes in Bohol expose of the controversial polls being rammed through despite a 72 hour restraining order issued by the court.
However, DILG RD Naval showed genuine surprise when told that a court restrain was issued prior to the activity.
Admitting he was not made aware of the court order to stop the special elections, Naval who was there to see the elections added in radio interviews that "[elections] ran smoothly" while Mabini Federated Council President Crispina Vergara was elected.
Seat contender and city barangay councils president Faro Cabalit sought for the court's intervention to stall the elections and was a no-show during the elections, sources said.
Cabalit assailed about the irregularity of holding the polls while neglecting the 15-day notice of special elections as the association's election code mandates.
The city councilor argued that he only received his notice of special elections less than a week, reports said.
Cabalit succeeded in getting a court order from Judge Suceso Arcamo of Regional Trical Court Branch 47.
But the Liga committee accordingly dismissed the order as it was not addressed to them, a loacal weekly said.
The court's restraining order was addressed to Liga President Board Member Concepcion Lim, who resigned last Saturday, after being elected as vice governor.
Amid the controversy, DILG director Naval advised to contenders to just accept the results peacefully as the newly elected replacements of the vacant seats would only be there for less than three months.
By all indications, barangay elections, which happen in October of this year would put in a new set of barangay leaders and a regular Liga election is in the offing, Naval said.
Besides, what can a Liga President who will sit for just three months do to implement a program?
Asked if the trip Liga member's trip abroad after the elections was in order, Naval said his office granted the permit to travel as it in order and was a programmed Liga activity. (PIA-Bohol) [top]
