DOH to conduct forum to fight anemia

by Oliver T. Baccay

Tuguegarao City (28 June) -- The Department of Health (DOH) Region 2, in collaboration with the different line agencies and Local Government Units, is set to conduct forum to plan out solutions on the problem on iron deficiency anemia in Region 2.

The initiatives is brought about by the result of the survey conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) that Cagayan Valley Region has the highest number of cases of iron deficiency anemia in the whole country.

The DOH met with Regional, Provincial and City Nutrition Council members to fastrack the activities, programs and advocacies to be done to determine the cause of the problem and to resolve the said findings.

Dr. Carlos Cortina, Provincial Nutrition Action Officer of Cagayan, said the reasons behind the survey result is still not clear but there must be actions to be taken to identify the root cause and to resolve the problem.

Cortina said it might because of the eating habit or cooking style of the people of Region 2, or it may be due to the lifestyle of the respondents to where the research was conducted.

Ms. Carol Jean Domingo, Regional Technical Assistant for Nutrition (RTAN)-DOH, said the forum to be conducted next month will be the first move for the series of activities to be conducted to fight anemia.

Domingo said lots of advocacy and information education campaigns will be conducted to educate and convince the public to eat iron rich foods.

The LGUs has also committed to provide medical services to their constituents to resolve the problem of iron deficiency anemia. (PIA 2) [top]
