Boat landing facility built for Liguasan Marsh fisherfolks

by Carina L. Cayon

Davao City (29 June) -- A concrete boat landing facility termed as a "Balogo Boat Landing" has been built to serve some "1,400 residents including fisherfolks and traders who make a living" in Barangay Matilac part of the Liguasan Marsh in Pigcawayan, North Cotabato.

In a press statement sent by the Growth with Equity in Mindanao, the boat landing facility in Sitio Balogo will be used by some 50 small boats coming from Matilac and neighboring barangays as drop-off point for passengers and cargo going to Pigcawayan town.

According to GEM, the facility has "helped improve water transport and encouraged economic activity in this section of the Liguasan Marsh."

The concreted boat landing facility was part of the "127 barangay infrastructure projects (BIPs) built by USAID's Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program and local partners in North Cotabato Province alone," GEM stated.

More than 1,100 infrastructure facilities have already been constructed in conflict-affected areas in Mindanao under GEM with the oversight function of the Mindanao Development Authority.

According to its website, GEM 3, a U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) funded program, "operates throughout Mindanao, with a special focus on the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and other conflict-affected areas of Mindanao (CAAM)." (PIA-XI) [top]
