"Gulayan ha kada Bungsaran" highlights Nutrition Month fete in Region 8

By Gemma Tabao

Tacloban City (5 July) -- Celebrated every July of the year, Nutrition Month kicks-off today, July 5, 2010, 1:30 in the afternoon at the Balyuan Amphitheater, this city. fete

Participated in by different government agencies as well as the local government units of Leyte and Tacloban City, the celebration will start with a surumpay motorcade, of which three groups of vehicles will assemble in different places and follow different routes, the purpose of which is to cover more areas in terms of raising people's awareness on the importance of the activity.

The month-long celebration will be highlighted with the launching of the "Gulayan ha Kada Bungsaran", or planting vegetables in the garden, which is one of the best but cheapest strategies to ensure that vegetables are part of the family's regular meal.

The approach will also help the family save additional expenses for food, and may even augment the family's income should this practice become feasible for business.

To be launched also during the day's activity is the ""One Nutrition, One Nation" movement, which will encourage people's participation to improve their own nutritional status and contribute to improve the community's nutrition situation.

The movement will likewise push the members to promote the different health and nutritional interventions in efforts to help solve malnutrition and hunger, especially among children.

Other activities to be included in the program are Cooking Demonstrations on Complementary Foods, as well as Nutrition Talks by the Honorable Leyte Governor, Jericho Petilla; Presidential Assistant for Eastern Visayas, Cynthia Nierras; and, Congressman Florencio Noel of the Waray Partylist.

With this year's theme, "Sa Pagkaing Tama at Sapat, Wastong Timbang ni Baby and Katapat", the celebration will strongly focus on the young child and infant feeding practices that would bring wellness and nutrition among children. (PIA8) [top]
