Davao Oriental out-of-school youth complete Masonry NC2 training

Mati City, Davao Oriental (8 September) -- Twenty-five out-of-school youth (OSY) who are NC1 Masons graduated Monday from a one-week Training Cum Production in Masonry NC2, a joint project of Holcim Philippines, TESDA, DSWD, 2nd Congressional District of Davao Oriental, and the LGU of Mati, Davao Oriental. This was bared by Dalmin Faith A. Igana, focal person on DSWD Core Shelter Assistance Program.

Masonry NC2 competency involves bricks/blocks laying, plastering wall surface and installing pre-cast baluster or handrail. The training was dubbed Holcim'galing Mason.

According to Igana, Holcim's involvement is part of Holcim's Masonry Skills Development and Livelihood Program targeting the out-of-school youth and unemployed adults. Holcim covered the training subsidy such as T-shirt, masonry tools, hardhat, gloves, goggles, safety shoes, daily allowance of P200 and competency assessor fee; honorarium for trainers and assessors; cement; logistical support; and assessment and certification sponsorship, Igana said.

"On the other hand, TESDA designed the training curriculum and conducted the selection of the 25 NC1 holders as well as the competency assessment and certification," Igana revealed. She said TESDA also ensured that training standard is followed. Likewise, it provided the trainer and assessor, and technical and administrative support, she said.

Igana said DSWD and the Office of the 2nd Congressional District of Davao Oriental took charge of the project design, provided five housing units as training cum production site and other required construction materials.

Meanwhile, Mati LGU donated the project site in Guangguang, Dahican, she said. Adding, "The LGU also handled the site preparation and land development, housing layout and zocallo, transportation of participants, monitoring of program status, and meal subsidy and lodging of trainees."

The training launch was led by Vice Governor Mayo Z. Almario, Raquel E. Nunez of DSWD, Mayor Michelle N. Rabat, Ma. Eliza Delos Santos of Holcim Philippines, and Engr. Isidro M. Montilla of TESDA Davao Oriental. (DSWD/carmelacadigalduron) [top]
