Dengue cases increase by 20% from January this year

San Fernando City, La Union (8 September) -- Dengue cases in the region showed an increase of 20 % higher with a total of 2,573 cases admitted in different disease reporting units in Region 1from January 1-September 6, 2010, as compared to the 2,144 reported cases, same period last year.
Based on the data coming from the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) of the Department of Health ? Center for Health Development Regional Office I (DOH-CHD-ROI), 1,464 cases were admitted in Government Hospitals, 1,005 in Private Hospitals and 104 cases in various Rural Health Units/City Health Units in the region.
Report showed that based on geographic distribution, La Union has the highest number of reported cases with 756; Ilocos Norte - 734; Pangasinan ? 533; and Ilocos Sur ? 550 cases.
Total number of reported deaths is 32, and the province of Ilocos Sur has the highest with 11 mortality rate; next is Ilocos Norte with 11; Pangasinan ? 6; and La Union ? 3.
Data also showed that age range of cases were from less than a month old to 88 years. Most commonly affected are the 5-9 age bracket and majority of which are males with a percentage of 52.8 % of the total number of cases. (PIA-RO1/LU) [top]
