PIA Press Release

Best way to fight crime is to prevent it, says Napolcom

Pagadian City (8 September) -- The National Police Commission (Napolcom-IX) and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG-IX) family culminates today (Sept. 7) the celebration of the 16th National Crime Prevention Week with this year's theme: "Komunidad at Pulisya, Magkasama Tungo sa Pag-unlad ng Bayan," and with the slogan: "Ako, Ikaw, Tayong Lahat Laban sa Krimen."

NAPOLCOM Regional Director Joseph D. Gonzalo, MNSA, during the weekly PIA Media Forum held at the Abegail Hall, New Roxan Hotel this city said, this year's celebration we focus to give emphasis on the crucial role played by the citizens on the police-community relationship.

We focus on this because as I have always been saying, if the community would not cooperate or help the police and other enforcement agencies of the government they would not be effective in pursuing their task, Dir. Gonzalo stressed.

He said, we are celebrating Crime Prevention Week because we believe that the best way to fight crime is to prevent it. This is the essence of what we are doing, we have to focus on crime prevention and not to control. As we all knew that "prevention is better than cure," Gonzalo said.

Most of the jobs of our police and other enforcement agencies are focus on crime prevention -- not on reaction, we have to be pro-active and not reactive. In the same manner the community or the people should be pro-active and not reactive also when it comes to crime, Gonzalo added.

In the same occasion, DILG Assistant Regional Director Pedro Cuevas in his opening statement reiterated the mandate of DILG which is to promote peace and order and ensure public safety and further strengthen the capability aimed towards the effective delivery of the services to the clientele.

He also announced that the Regional Management Coordinating Committee (RMCC) which is composed of the DILG family, the local government sector, NAPOLCOM, PNP, BFP, and BJMP will convene today (Sept. 08) for the re-organizational meeting with the purpose to strengthen further the inter-collaborative efforts of the DILG family as far as the implementation of various programs, projects and activities are concerned.
