Collaboration to boost RP research and development capabilities
Manila (12 September) -- At a recently held meeting with members of the Congressional Commission on Science Technology and Engineering (COMSTE), Dr. Alvin Culaba, newly elected President of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) proposed that COMSTE and the NRCP collaborate in efforts to develop projects and make them commercially viable through the effective use of Research and Development (R&D).
Dr. Culaba proposed that COMSTE, which has already identified crucial projects in 6 key areas (Energy and Environment; Science Math and Engineering Education; IT and IT enabled industries; Health Sciences; Electronics and Semiconductors; Agriculture and Food) that need to be pursued and the NRCP, can collaborate with COMSTE and provide the needed basic R&D for many of the identified projects.
Sen. Edgardo J. Angara, Chair of COMSTE, lauded the collaborative ties which he said would, "help speed up the development and implementation of important projects such as the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) the Disaster Science Center and Renewable Energy Systems."
Dr. Culaba further stated that the foundation for the success of these projects can be made secure with the backing of strong, scientific R&D platforms. The collaboration can create an innovation cycle, where the NRCP taps its resources for basic R&D for COMSTE projects that will meet industry needs.
This innovation cycle will help build up the competitiveness level of the country by creating commercially viable output for project proposals securely grounded by R&D that is supported by the best of our scientists.
The NRCP is an attached agency of the Department of Science and Technology mandated to provide assistance for the development of the research capabilities of Filipino scientists. (COMSTE) [top]
