PIA Press Release

Capiz to bare excellent towns

by Jemin B. Guillermo

Roxas City (14 September) -- The Excellence in Local Governance (EXCELL) award provincial search is expected to conclude this week.

Interior and Local Government Provincial Director Helen Mestidio disclosed that the evaluation of the different towns in Capiz will end on September 15 already.

"We are stepping out the provincial search to prepare our provincial entry to the Regional EXCELL evaluation," Mestidio said.

She explained that the EXCELL Awards which started in 2008 is a continuing project of the DILG in Western Visayas to recognize the best managed local governments in the region, particularly their achievements, initiatives and innovations in governance, administration, social services, economic development, environmental management and local legislation.

Mestidio likewise stressed that said Awards complements the DILG and its partner agencies' desire to recognize and promote the best practices and innovations in local governance as well as complements its unwavering commitment to support and encourage good governance.

She added that the Search covers two categories, namely Category A which is composed of 1st to 3rd class municipalities, while Category B includes those that belong to the 4th to 6th class towns.

At the Regional level, the best performing province, city, 1st to 3rd class municipality as well as 4th to 6th class municipality will be awarded with a cash prize and plaque, she said, adding that a cash prize and plaque will also be given to those that will excel in Administrative Governance, Social Services, Economic Development, Environment management and Local Legislation.

On the other hand, Capiz Governor Victor Tanco had already appropriated funds and plaque for the towns that will be declared champions in the different areas of governance.

Mestidio said that the continuous search for excellence in local governance will also encourage other local government units to work more for the welfare of their respective constituents.

She said that with Gov. Tanco's commitment for excellence in local governance, the said program continues to gain the support of the municipalities and other partner agencies.

This year's EXCELL Provincial Search Committee has the participation of the DILG as chairman with the membership of the Office of the Governor, Department of Education, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Philippine National Police, Philippine Information Agency, Provincial health Office, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, Provincial Accounting Office, Philippine Councilor's League and REACT Philippines, representing the non-government organization.
