Kusina Ilokandia 2010 competition opens

San Fernando City, La Union (15 September) -- Kusina Ilokandia 2010 culinary competition set on September 16-18, 2010 at San Juan Gymnasium, San Juan, La Union has been opened to all skilled workers and students to showcase their work excellence in the tourism industry in a globally competitive setting.

"The culinary skills competition with this year's theme 'Unwrapping Ilocandia's Finest in Culinary Expertise and Creativity towards Global Standards and Competence', aims at showcasing the Ilocanos cuisine and skills in terms of presenting a dish in a unique setting," Catherine Torricer, Project Manager of Kusina Ilocandia 2010 said.

Torricer further added that the competition will promote cooperation between and among partner government agencies, academe, private and labor sectors thru industry associations in the pursuit of excellence, commendable work values for tourism workers and at the same time, encourage local experts to participate in national competitions.

The competition covers three areas to include the professional division, the student division and the special events.

Professional division is divided into Team Category which covers the setting menu, fine dining set-up with menu card, freestyle wedding set up ? presidential table for bride and groom and market basket ilocano; while the Individual Category covers hot dish, plated appetizer, gourmet dessert, wedding cake decoration, cocktail mixing, flair tending, best 'halo-halo', flower arrangement for wedding and table set-up.

Student division is likewise divided into team category that covers waiter's relay, table skirting, Ilokano top chef, fruit and vegetable carving, fine dining st-up with menu card, wedding cake decoration on the spot and culinary quiz.

Individual category covers hot dish, pasta and noodles live cooking, Ilokano gourmet dessert, on the spot cocktail mixing, on the spot napkin folding, flower arrangement for wedding, cocktail mixing with flair tending and bed make-up live.

The special events which will add on to the glow of the competition include the food streets presentation with booth, various cooking demonstrations, kitchen and dinning trade and consumers fair, on the spot flower arrangements and product sampling or free food tasting and kawayan product showcasing.

Best Food Photography for professional and neophyte photographers is also at hand, along with the search for the Mr. and Ms. Kusina Ilokandia, the first of its kind contest since Kusina Ilokandia was conceptualized in 1997.

The 3-day event is spearheaded by the La Union Hotel, Resort and Restaurant Association (LUHRRA) and the La Union Convention and Visitor's Bureau, in partnership with partner agencies to include the Technical Education Skills Development Association, Department of Tourism, Department of Trade and Industry, Commission on Higher Education; private organization represented by the La Union Tvet Assessors Association; and the media.

The first Kusina Ilocandia events under the Tourism Industry Board Foundation, Inc. were conducted on August 27-28, 1997 at Cresta del Mar, Bauang; on August 12-13, 1998 at then Agoo Playa Hotel in Agoo and on August 22-23, 2001 at Central Bank in San Fernando City, all of the province of La Union.

In 2005, the LUHRRA, under the leadership of its past president Rodolfo Navarro, staged a similar concept dubbed as the Ilocandia Food Festival that was tied-up with STRAM, Inc. from Manila. (PIA Region 1/La Union) [top]
