FITS to award farmer scientists on Araw ng Siquijor
Province of Siquijor (15 September) -- The Provincial Farmers Information and Technology Service (FITS) Consortium will award on September 17 this year's winner for its Search for Farmer Scientist in the province of Siquijor.
Engr. Mario E. de la Pena, Provincial Director of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) here said awarding for the outstanding farmer scientists will be done on September 17, 2010 to highlight the 39th Siquijor Day celebration.
The Search is a yearly program of the Provincial FITS during the Araw ng Siquijor in recognition to the farmers' contribution to agricultural development in the province.

It is in line with the Techno Gabay Program of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) that aims to empower the farmers, processors, traders, and entrepreneurs by making information and technology services accessible during critical decision making on production, processing, trading, and marketing activities.
Specifically, it seeks to lessen poverty in the barangay by encouraging local farmers to produce market driven products like root crops, peanut, banana, fruit trees, vegetables and other products while utilizing organic fertilizer and pesticides in order to ensure safe food products for the consumers.
The Provincial Search for Outstanding Farmer Scientist is initiated by the FITS Consortium in cooperation with the Provincial Government and the six local government units (LGUs). Each Municipal Agriculturist has identified 1-2 farmers in their respective municipalities who were screened by the FITS Consortium basing from the criteria set by Consortium.
Awardees will be given cash and farm implements while the rests of the contestants will be given consolation prizes.
