QC, Marikina pilot mosquito traps
Manila (16 September) -- The Department of Science and Technology has chosen the cities of Quezon and Marikina as pilot areas for its latest mosquito trap project designed to help curb the spread of dengue in the country.
According to Science & Technology secretary Mario Montejo, they will conduct pilot testing of the locally-produced trap in selected households in Quezon City and Marikina before it can be made available in the market by next month.
He said the trap, a black-painted tin can containing an organic solution capable of attracting and destroying dengue-carrying mosquitoes and eliminating 100 percent of its larvae, is safe to the environment.
He added that once the pilot testing is done in these areas successfully, they would be selling the mosquito trap for P30/can.
Meanwhile, the local governments of Quezon City and Marikina have boosted their anti-dengue drive measures as dengue-related cases in communities and schools in these areas have increased to alarming levels this rainy season. (PIA-MMIO) [top]
