Nueva Vizcaya DSWD conducts forum on Senior Citizens Act

Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya (September 16) -- Officials of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Cagayan Valley and in this province on Thursday conducted a forum on Senior Citizens Act or Republic Act 9994.

The forum which was conducted in coordination with the Provincial Federation of Senior Citizens Association of the Philippines (PFSCAP) - Nueva Vizcaya chapter at the provincial capitol compound's Ammungan hall here was attended by business establishment owners and operators, representatives from the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Veterans Regional Hospital (VRH), Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Hospital (NVPH), Phil Health and Provincial Health Office.

"There was an agreement reached during the forum particularly on the implementation of 20 percent discount for the elderlies. With this take off point, we are optimistic that the law will be complied by concerned sectors," said Lita Tabudlo, provincial social welfare and development officer.

Officials also underscored the need for the issuance of identification cards for elderlies without forcing them to join the local senior citizens organization in their respective communities.

"Elderlies need not become members to municipal-based organizations because the law mandates their right for such discounts among others," she said.

The forum was conducted to discuss the salient features of RA 0004 and its implementing rules and regulations inorder to come up with agreement and guidelines on its actual implementation.

RA 9994 is an act granting additional benefits and privileges to senior citizens. Further amending Republic Act No. 7432, as amended, otherwise known as "An Act to Maximize the contribution of Senior Citizens to nation builiding, grant benefits and special privileges and for other purposes".

The act will grant more benefits to senior citizens, it will restore their full 20-percent discount on goods and services previously diminished with the imposition of the expanded value-added tax. (PIA NVizcaya) [top]
