Legazpi beefs up drive vs dengue

by MP Solis

Legazpi City (23 September) -- The City Health Office (CHO) here has urged all barangay leaders to actively participate in a "search and destroy" mission to annihilate all the breeding areas of the pernicious mosquito dengue carriers at their own respective places to prevent the further spread of the increasing cases of dengue in the city.

Mayor Geraldine B. Rosal has earlier signed Executive Order (EO) 22 urging all the barangay officials and community leaders, also including all city, national and provincial line offices within the city vicinity to take part in the dengue prevention and control measures, emphasizing on maintaining cleanliness and destruction of possible breeding areas, among others, to address the worsening case dengue infection among locals.

Dr. Fulbert Gillego, CHO chief, directed all the barangay officials to carry out the DOH's 4s strategies in fighting mosquito-carriers of dengue including search and destroy, seek early consultation, say no to indiscriminate fogging and self protection.

Gillego said that residents should also practice the 4 o'clock habit that will maintain the cleanliness and environmental sanitation in the household surroundings to significantly bring down the number of infectious dengue cases here.

He likewise said that his office will concentrate on the top ten barangays with highest number of confirmed dengue cases to do space spraying

The CHO chief also obliged all barangay chiefs to submit regular reports to CHO on the status of dengue problems and the implementation of the program.

Based on the statistical data released by CHO, this city recorded some 459 cases from January to August this year, with victims mostly of children aging 1 to 7 years old.

The top five hot spot barangays are Washington Drive, with 24 cases, 10 cases in EM's Barrio 1, Bogtong 9, Arimbay 8, and Rawis and Binanuahanan 21 are equal with 7 cases.

Furthermore, the CHO has conducted a massive clean-up drive last September 18, 2010 to all confirmed dengue hot spot places in the entire city. (LGU Legazpi City/PIA/mal) [top]
