Activities lined up for Ilonggo senior citizens
Iloilo City (23 September) -- Various activities have been lined up for the older persons in this city to mark the observance of the "Linggo ng Nakatatandang Pilipino" from October 1 to 7, 2010.
Proclamation No. 470 signed by former President Fidel Ramos declares every first week of October as "Linggo ng Nakatatandang Pilipino" or the Elderly Filipino Week in the country.
Federation of Senior Citizens Associations of the Philippines, Iloilo City Chapter Inc. President Gerardo Canonero said the older persons in this city really look forward for the occasion every year as they actively participate in the celebration, especially in the social activities organized.
Canonero said some 28,000 older persons in this city have already applied and issued of their FSCAP IDs, to date.
This year, the week-long event will kick-off with a mass and a motorcade around the city. This will be followed by a program in the afternoon at SM City Mandurriao. Other activities include choral and vocal solo contests on October 2, a Fellowship on October 3, folk dance and ballroom dance competitions on October 4, composo and binalaybay contests on October 5, and Search for King Lolo and Queen Lola on October 6. All these activities will be held in the afternoon at SM City Mandurriao.
The week-long activity will be capped by the coronation of the King and Queen at 5:30 p.m. at Sarabia Manor Hotel with Congressman Jerry Trenas and Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog as honored guests.
Also, joining the celebration is the Regional Inter-Agency Committee for Older Persons in Western Visayas chaired by the Department of Social Welfare and Development 6. Aside from the lined-up activities of FSCAP, the RIACOP will also hold a program with the elderly of Asilo de Molo on October 7 in its effort to visit to the visitor less, indigent and sick older persons.
The RIACOP will also set up an information desk on the Implementing Rules and Regulations of Republic Act 9994 or Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010 during the activities at SM City.
With the theme "Nakatatanda:Tanglaw ng Bayan, Kaagapay sa Matuwid ng Daan", the yearly celebration aims to recognize the important contributions of older persons in nation building among others. (PIA/LAFrench) [top]
