Key mining players unite for positive change in Mindanao

Dapitan City (24 September) -- Key players of the mining industry in Mindanao have united to drum up support for responsible mining.

The Coalition for Responsible Mining in Mindanao or COREMIN2, a group composed of mining companies with operating mines and projects in Mindanao, was formally launched here yesterday.

COREMIN2 President Rocky Dimaculangan, who is also Director for Public Affairs of TVI Resources said the coalition was organized with the vision of becoming a catalyst for positive change through responsible mining in Mindanao.

Dimaculangan cited, "Mindanao is a rich island with vast potentials, and one of these is its rich mineral resources. If we are able to tap these resources responsibly, the mining industry will prove to be the main economic driver for Mindanao."

He also added that "COREMIN2 recognizes that mining has had a less than positive legacy in the country. However, with the safeguards that are currently in place, through the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 and other related laws, coupled with COREMIN's commitment to do business with honor, we aim to increase public awareness on responsible mining and its key role in national development."

Mining stakeholders composed of indigenous people (IP) and barangay communities, local governments, national government agencies and business, among other sectors attended the launching and pledged support for responsible mining.

COREMIN2 members are mining companies operating in Zamboanga Peninsula, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, Compostela Valley and Cagayan de Oro City.

The mining companies operating in Zamboanga Peninsula include TVIRD, PHILEX Gold Philippines, Inc., 168 Ferrum, and Industrial Sand and Gravel (ISAG) permit holders represented by Montaņo Construction & Development Corporation, Monteclaro, Pruelo Jalosjos, RS Tan and Sto Niņo.

Sagittarius Mines, Inc.. on the other hand, is operating in South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and Davao del Sur.

Operating in Cagayan de Oro City is Perfect World Metal Mining Corp. while Apex mining Company, Inc. is based in the province of Compostela Valley. (PIA-ZN) [top]
