DENR, DepEd launch 2010 IYB celebration in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay

Zamboanga City (24 September) -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources in collaboration with the Dept. of Education- Zamboanga Sibugay held the launching program of the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) at the Ipil District Teacher's Conference Hall in Ipil Central School Campus on September 20, 2010 at 8 o'clock in the morning.

The objectives of which is to promote public awareness on biodiversity and its importance to the national development, highlight local initiatives on biodiversity conservation, encourage people to actively participate in Earth care, among other activities.

Biodiversity is the variety of life on earth, essential to sustaining the living networks and ecosystems that provide us all with health, wealth, food, fuel and vital services our lives depend on.

The Event which included a five-day photo exhibit, fitting program and Information, Education and Communication campaign on biodiversity and climate change was attended by science teachers and grade school pupils under Ipil District as well as college students of the Sibugay Institute of Technology, Inc. (STII) numbering 348.

Presidential Proclamation No. 2003 issued on February 19, 2010 which declares 2010 as the National Year of Biodiversity is in support to the United Nations Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity's (SCBD) initiative declaring 2010 as the IYB with the theme "Biodiversity is life. Biodiversity is our life".

During the program, Protected Areas Wildlife and Coastal Zone Mgt. Services (PAWCZMS) Regional Technical Director Rodolfo U. Aradanas gave the overview of the IYB celebration. He stated that there is a dearth of information materials on biodiversity resulting in low public awareness on the values of biodiversity and conservation. Hence, this celebration is imperative to realize the IYB objectives.

The IYB also promotes the engagement of the public and other actors for the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity. According to SCBD, this year also celebrates the successes in realizing the target of achieving a significant reduction in the rate of biodiversity loss this year, he quoted.

In his message, DENR-IX Regional Executive Director Arleigh J. Adorable said: "We are surrounded by biodiversity yet we often fail to recognize its value. We take biodiversity so much for granted and it is so obviously all around us that it is sometimes easy to forget it's there ? that we are a part of it and can't live apart from it."

Dr. Froilan M. Menez, Elementary Science & Health Education program supervisor gave the closing remarks "We in the DepEd would like to thank DENR for initiating this activity. I would like to admit to this group, that this year is the most comprehensive and evidence-based celebration of our National Science Club Month. Why? This activity is one of its kind. A novel and extraordinary. Film viewing, lecture, forum discussion but the DENR served as the lead. When asked by teachers through text messages, where and when is the science camp, he answered them through text, "I'm preparing for a bigger event and that is the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity where in fact, instead of the Division Science Camp for this school year, let's have the Biodiversity Camp by January 2011 where we will invite all these speakers from DENR be our lecturers during the camp."

He also negotiated to the RED to give them various species of endemic trees for their School Forest Parks. "We are intensifying tree planting activities in our schools. I am also looking forward for the signing of the MOA for a training to be sponsored by DENR for selected teachers and we plan out to have it this last week of October or 2nd week of November. This will be a free training for those who will be selected. We want our teachers to be actively involved in the biodiversity preservation campaign. We, as teachers should instill to the minds of the young the importance of protecting our environment and let this information and insights be formally integrated again in the lessons for this year just like what you did last year" Menez stated. Finally, he urged everyone to be an FOB (Friends of Biodiversity).

The launching of 2010 as the IYB was undertaken by DENR in the cities of Pagadian and Dapitan in May and June, respectively. Similar activity will also be done by October 4-11 in Zamboanga City. (HAA/ DENR-IX) [top]
