Lawmen place 14 provinces under watchlist for Barangay and SK polls

Camp President Quirino, Ilocos Sur (24 September) -- At least 14 provinces were placed for strict monitoring by the law enforcement agencies in connection for the conduct of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections on October 25, 2010, it was reported here.
Brig. Gen. Jose Mabanta Jr., spokesman of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), told Thursday that among these provinces listed under election watchlist were Samar, Lanao del Sur, Lanao del Norte, Maguindanao, Sulu, Basilan, Nueva Ecija, Abra, Surigao, Zamboanga, Sibugay, Sarangani, Eastern and Western Samar; and Antique.
He said that these provinces were listed in the watchlist considering the existence of private armed groups in the area.
"Our troops are presently having intense preparation to ensure an honest, peaceful and orderly elections on October 25," Mabanta said.
Meanwhile, Ilocos Sur police director Senior Superintendent Eduardo Dopale told that they are now ready for the implementation of the Comelec gun ban that will commence on September 25, 2010 and will end on November 10, 2010.
"Although the province of Ilocos Sur is generally peaceful, police check points are now ready for installation while police visibility and patrolling are institutionalize to ensure honest and orderly barangay and SK elections in the province," Dopale said.
He disclosed that the start of the filing of candidacy for those who want to run in any elective positions in the barangay will be on October 1 and will end on October 13. The campaign period is set on October 14 to 23, 2010. (PIA Ilocos Sur) [top]
