SSS pushes for universal coverage of qualified members

by Lito Dar

Baguio City (25 September) -- Now on its 53rd year of service as a social institution, the Social Security System (SSS) has remained a steadfast partner of the workingmen in improving their lives and of the government and private businesses in economic development

SSS Baguio Branch Manager Benjamin Lopez, in an interview stressed that under P-Noy's administration, SSS will continuously work for efficient, effective and fast delivery of service to its members. He informed that the institution through its Field Inspectorate Office is working hard in pushing for a'universal coverage' of all qualified members.

'It is a continuing program of SSS to cover all coverable employees that are not yet registered as member,' Lopez said. He stressed that as a matter of policy, all employees of business establishment regardless of the nature of their employment, should be covered by SSS on the first day of their employment.

Lopez reminded all business establishment regardless of the number of employees they have, to report or register their newly hired employees within 30 days (upon hiring) in order to avoid bigger liabilities especially in case of emergency or accident.

'Within 30 days from their first day employment, sakop na sila ng SSS but after the 30 days grace period or processing period at hindi pa sila nai-report ng kanilang employer papasok na dito ang employer's liabilities. In case of accident ang employer na ang sasagot sa mga kaukulang benepisyo na dapat matanggap ng empleyado,' Lopez explained.

He stressed that in case of accident or death during an employee's travel going to and from work, the employer will to cover the necessary SSS burial and death benefits including a 5-year guaranteed pension.

'So instead of paying just a few hundred of pesos for their employee, in case of an accident or death, an employer can be liable to pay hundreds of thousands of pesos to the employee's beneficiaries,' Lopez stressed.

According to Lopez, each of the Field Inspectorate Account Officers has his own area to monitor for compliance of business establishments in terms of registration and payment. They have a listing on who are registered or not and also of who are paying their members contribution or not,' he added.

In the same interview, SSS Baguio Field Inspectorate Section Head, Don Malatag urged inactive SSS member to revive their membership so that they can continue to avail of the numerous benefits SSS provides to their members.

'Once you become an SSS member, you are a member for life,' Malatag stressed. (PIA) [top]
