Statistics Month celebration in Eastern Visayas starts October 1

Tacloban City (29 September) -- The month-long celebration of the National Statistics Month (NSM) in Eastern Visayas which is anchored on the theme: "Towards a Philippine Statistical System Responsive to Emerging National and Global Challenge" will start on October 1, 2010.
The celebration is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647 declaring the month of October of every year as the National Statistics Month.
Memorandum Circular No. 01-10 has also been issued by NCSB enjoining all agencies of the government, academic institutions and the private sector to actively participate and support the celebration.
According to Evangeline M. Paran, Regional Head of the National Statistical Coordination Board (NCSB) in region 8 in a press release, the annual celebration is now on its 21st year.
She added that the NSM celebration aims to promote, enhance and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of society.
"The celebration will also elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country", Paran stressed.
The NCSB head said the NSM celebration in the region will start with a an opening ceremonies at around 10:00 o' clock in the morning on October 1 at Robinsons Place Tacloban with Congressman Mel Senen Sarmiento of the First District of Samar and former chair of the Regional Development Council (RDC) in Eastern Visayas as keynote speaker.
Part of the activities during the opening ceremonies on October 1 include the presentation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Progress Report for Eastern Visayas which will be presented by NCSB; survey on Overseas Filipinos which will be presented by the National Statistics Office (NSO) and the display of statistical exhibits of various agencies.
She informed that the Regional Statistical Coordination Committee (RSCC) through the NCSB as its secretariat will lead the month-long celebration in Eastern Visayas.
