Commentary: Stop cockfights?
By Ma. Nila O. Argel
Vigan City (29 September) -- Chiefs of the Local Government Units (LGUs) have been empowered to approve the operation of cockfights in barangays, towns, and cities. During days of cockfights, people troop to the arenas: the rich in cars and ordinary people in tricycles.
Cockfights surely provide the LGUs taxes but the adverse effects are felt in families. When a bettor loses, especially if there is a great amount involved, there is a tendency to bring home the feeling of regret and it might lead to quarrels.
In some arenas, prostitutes are seen around to give temporary happiness to men and they allow even minors to enter the arena. The children are faced with bad influences at an early age.
The Department of Education should help the government in inculcating to the Filipino youth the dignity of work so that the Philippines will eventually achieve the Moral Recovery we all aspire. The youth can be instruments of change for a better Philippines. (PIA Ilocos Sur) [top]
