Butuan hosts 1st Caraga Reg'l Fruit Forum

Butuan City (29 September) -- More than two hundred participants coming from the provinces all over Caraga region attended the one-day1st Caraga Regional Fruit Forum held in this city yesterday.
With this year's theme: "Enhancing The Crop, Sustaining the Growth and Establishing The Hub" the activity was attended by top officials from the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office XIII led by RED Reinerio B. Belarmino, Jr., officials from the GEM USAID, city government represented by City Councilor Hon. Angelo Calo, chair of the City Council's Committee on Agriculture (who represented Butuan City Mayor Ferdinand M. Amante) as well as the representatives of the association of fruit planters, buyers, those who were involved in the production of food and fruit products and other stakeholders.
The first plenary session revolved on the topic "Caraga's Advantages, Opportunities and Challenges" under which, Ms. Lynn Parenas, Chief, Crops Division of DA Regional Office presented the "Caraga Fruit Industry Profile And Program Support." It was followed by another presentation of "Opportunities and Challenges of Caraga's Fruit Industry" by Ms. Ellen Lantican, from the GEM USAID. Another presentation of the GEM USAID on the topic "Mindanao Fruit Value Chain" was made by Mr. Arnold A. Dacula.
The second plenary session discussed the "Industry Updates and Marketing Opportunities for Caraga" with eight presenters from the various fruit-based industries and products here in the region. The under topics "Expansion Program On Banana" was presented by Mr. Manuel B. Uy, Manager, AMS Group of Companies, Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte and Mr. Romeo Sacro, Manager of the Celebes Agricultural Corporation, Km. 3, Baan, Butuan City.
The presentations were continued during the afternoon sessions, where the sub-topics "Off Season Mango Production Guide" was presented by Mr. Benjamin D. Dalaguan ACC III, DA RFO XIII; "Marketing Opportunities for Mango and Other Fruits" by Mr. Rey Paraiso, Manila Fruit Buyer, "Production And Marketing Opportunities for Lanzones and Mangosteen" by Dr. Ismael Ellevaso, a Professor from Bayugan City; "Production and Marketing Opportunities on Papaya and Pineapple" by Mr. Francis Rivera, Manager, Papaya Operations, Del Monte, Philippines; Mr. Angelito Delanto, General Manager of Nice Choice, an emerging locally-produced, Papaya-based food product, which is now finding its way not only in the city malls, superstores and food stalls but also in the other parts of the region and even in the country as well. Another presentation by Mr. Jay Pangtangco of the Fruitgems Agri Development Corporation of Tubay, Agusan del Norte on similar topic was made towards the end of the afternoon session, followed by open discussions by the participants on the various topics presented.
A market matching activity was made towards the end of the forum followed by a synthesis and the closing program. (The Butuan Star/PIA-Caraga) [top]
