Commentary: Bloody end of the 2010 bar exams
By Jonnie H. Buenaventura
Tacloban City (29 September) -- The bar examinations have just ended and the barristers were marching along the thoroughfares to be cheered upon by operators, their families and friends.
After a long and rigorous study and review of the doctrine and principles of law, suddenly a rumble ensued at Gate 3 involving members of the fraternities and sororities that made some innocent bar operators and well-wishers wounded and scampered to different directions to seek shield and comfort.
A few minutes after the rumble at Gate 3 an explosion was heard at Gate 1 of De la Salle University which left 47 injured, including San Sebastian College law student Raissa Laurel, whose two legs were amputated and who is now confined at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Philippine General Hospital.
One female second year law student from the San Beda College of Law, Camille Villasin, daughter of Leyte Metropolitan Water District (LMWD) Engr. Nestor "Gang-Gang" Villasin and sister of Leyte Board Member Nico Villasin, was hurt during the blast. She is now in stable condition at the Manila Doctors Hospital. She obtained minor injuries in his legs.
Meanwhile, at around nine o?clock in the evening a group of some 40 fraternity members of a rival group surprised the Lambda Rho San Beda Rho Fraternity from San Beda College of Law carrying a steel pipe, bladed weapon and wood, hurriedly invaded the San Beda Law Student Headquarters at Cool Nest along Taft Avenue,500 meters away from the crime scene of the blast and strike any member of the Lambda Rho and left an undisclosed Lambda Rho Fraternity and Sorority members wounded and others are in a critical condition.
In the turn of events, most of the casualties came from the Lambda Rho fraternity.
The police authorities concluded that a fraternity war was the motive in the blast explosion at the De La Salle University along Taft Avenue.
Friends and relatives of the invasion at the Cool Nest along Taft Avenue by a fraternity seek an in-depth investigation by not only focusing on the blast explosion because they are related incidents and the culprit can be the same fraternity members.
A suspect in the explosion, Jed Carlo Lazaga, a 4th year law student of the University of San Jose Recoletos Law School in Cebu province, denied any hand in the incident. (PIA-8) [top]
