CENRO Sta. Rita intensifies info campaign to curb timber poaching

Tacloban City (29 September) -- The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Sta. Rita, Samar is currently conducting an information campaign on the importance of forest conservation and protection in order to avoid the perennial problem of timber poaching in said area.

Being considered as one of the hot spots of timber poaching in the province of Samar, a community assembly, spearheaded by its CENR Officer Forester Pierre C. Gillo was recently held in Barangay Tinabanan, Marabut.

The assembly was participated in by the barangay officials of Tinabanan, Legaspi and Tagalang all of Marabut, Samar. Representatives coming from the municipal government of Marabut, Samar as well as the Philippine National Police and the Philippine Army were also present during said assembly.

Topics discussed in the assembly included "Salient Features of Forestry Laws" particularly Presidential Decree 705 together with its amendments, and the Chainsaw and Wildlife Acts which is currently being implemented by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The importance and significance of conserving the resources were likewise taken up.

According to Gillo, the barangay assembly aims to increase awareness of the residents in said area on biodiversity conservation and to update them on national laws relevant to protected area management and biodiversity conservation.

CENRO Gillo is encouraging the residents of Marabut, particularly in Barangay Legaspi, Tinabanan and Tagalag to avail of the alternative programs being offered by the government such as the Community Based Forest Management Program (CBFMP).

Under the CBFMP, organized communities are given a tenure instrument through the CBFMP Agreement wherein they are given stewardship of a given area for a period of twenty-five (25) years which is renewable for another term.

CENRO Gillo encouraged the participants in the assembly to share with the constituents what they have learned in said gathering. Likewise, he bared that they have also conducted similar assemblies in other hot spot areas wherein timber poaching is rampant. (PIA 8) [top]
