Cagayan begins rehabilitation following floods

Tuguegarao City (9 November) -- Officials from the different agencies in the province of Cagayan have converged efforts to immediately act on rehabilitation to flood victims and damages.

Cagayan Governor Alvaro Antonio sought help from different agencies who would be of help to do massive rehabilitations to flood victims, especially those who lost their homes and livelihood.

He said there are reported affected families who are still living inside the evacuation centers in different municipalities because their houses were totally destroyed.

Regional Director Arnel B. Garcia of DSWD-2 said the heavily affected will be given assistance immediately through the food-for-work program of DSWD. The affected families will be given supply of foods in exchange of their services in rehabilitating damaged infrastructure projects of the government or work as laborer in rebuilding of their own houses.

Garcia further announced that they are ready to rebuild the houses of those who were heavily affected through the core shelter projects but with the condition that the families will be relocated to higher and safer grounds.

Gov. Antonio said the Local Government Units of the affected municipalities will identify lots to be converted as core shelter community.

On the part of the labor department, Asst. Regional Director Elpidio Atal, Jr. said DOLE will help DSWD in building the core shelter by shouldering the labor expenses. He also stated that they will identify appropriate livelihood projects to the families who lost their livelihood.

On the other Hand, National Housing Authority (NHA) Region 2 also committed to help in building the core shelter by shouldering the land developments of each unit such as the electricity, water, utilities, titling of the lot and other facilities needed. NHA has 6 million pesos fund ready for the projects.

For the families of OFWs, OWWA Regional Director Robert Bassig announced that they are giving P 5,000 for families of OFWs who were affected by the recent typhoon "Juan" and flood.

Gov. Antonio also stated the severe damages on livelihood, agriculture and infrastructure caused by the typhoon and the flood need much fund for rehabilitation. He is set to present the damage report to Malacanang and seek further assistance to other national agencies. (PIA 2) [top]
