PNoy visits Cebu for 2nd time tomorrow

Cebu City (9 November) -- President Benigno S. Aquino III will be in Cebu tomorrow to lead the naming and delivery ceremony of SC-185 or M/V Tenshu Maru, the biggest bulk carrier ever made in the country and to attend the grand opening of the Radisson Blu Hotel.

Both events are scheduled in the morning where at 10 a.m., Pres. Aquino is expected to be at the Tsuneishi Heavy Industries Cebu Inc. (THICI) Shipyard at the West Cebu Industrial Park in Barangay Buanoy, Balamban while the Radisson event follows at 11:15 a.m. in Cebu City.

On hand to welcome the President as part of the reception party includes Gov. Gwen Garcia, Rep. Pablo John Garcia, PEZA Director General Atty. Lilia De Lima and top THICI officials lead by Jon Ramon Aboitz, Erramon Aboitiz and Makoto Kambara.

The President will lead the ceremonial breaking of the traditional bottle of champagne at the ship's bow by cutting the cord using a small axe and at the same time releasing the confetti.

SC-185 or M/V Tenshu Maru is the biggest ship built in the Philippines to date by the THICI, the 4th largest ship builder in the world. The M/V Tenshu Maru is a bulk carrier, with length of 286.90 meters, breadth of 45.00 meters, depth of 24.50 meters and draft of 18.04 meters. Its gross tonnage is 92,379 with net tonnage of 60,235 and deadweight of 180,630 metric tons.

A short program will follow after the ceremony where Erramon Aboitiz, President and CEO of Aboitiz Power Corp. will give the welcome remarks followed by a message and overview by THICI Vice President Hitoshi Kono.

PEZA Director General De Lima will introduce the President for his message.

Around 2,000 shipyard workers will witness the event tomorrow while a maximum of 150 guests and officials are also expected to attend.

From Balamban, Pres. Aquino will fly by chopper to Cebu City for his second engagement which is the grand opening of the Radisson Blu Hotel at the North Reclamation Area in Cebu City.

Forming the reception party at the Radisson Hotel include Hans Sy, Elizabeth Sy - President of SM Hotels and Convention Corp., Teresita Sy-Coson - Vice Chairperson, SM Corp. and other members of the Sy family, Grant Gaskin - General Manager of Radisson Blu Hotel, Xerxres Meher-Homji -Executive Vice President & Chief Development Officer of Carlson Hotels Worldwide Asia-Pacific, Lyle Lewis - Area VP of Operations for China, Carlson Hotels Worldwide Asia-Pacific and local officials namely Rep. Tomas Osmeņa, Rep. Rachel del Mar and Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama.

Pres. Aquino will lead the ribbon-cutting at the main lobby witnessed by around 150 invited guests where a short program will be held.

Elizabeth Sy will give the Welcome Remarks and Overview of the Project after which the President will then give his message.

The Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu aims for an upscale market with its 400 room accommodation, two spacious and contemporary ballrooms and the state-of-the-art meeting rooms/facilities.

The Carlson Hotels and SM Hotels and Convention Corp. are partners in setting up the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cebu. The former undertakes the management of the hotel while the SM Group, through SM Investments Corp. (SMIC) invested about P2.5 B to rehabilitate the structure originally built for a Sheraton Hotel. The Radisson Cebu facility was completed after three years of renovation.
