By Edwin L. Diesto

Zamboanga City (9 November) -- The city is set to celebrate Week of Peace on Nov. 25 to Dec.1 with the theme "Responsive and Responsible Governance: Key to Peace, Development and Sustainability."

The Week of Peace celebration is a comprehensive promotional activity that involves various Government Organization's, Non-Government Organization's and Private Organization's in advocating the culture of Peace in Southern Philippines.

It is a celebration of Peace which was initiated by Peace Advocates Zamboanga (PAZ) and SALAM Foundation. It has snowballed into a Mindanao-wide event as adopted by the Bishop-Ulama Conference and perpetuated as an annual observance through the Presidential Proclamation # 127 S. 2001.

City Mayor Celso Lobregat issued an Executive Order No. CL. 362010 declaring the period Nov. 25 to Dec.1 as Mindanao Week of Peace. "The local government recognizes the common aspirations of Mindanao to live in peace, unity and harmony with each other regardless of status in life or culture."

A joint statement of the Bishops-Ulama Conference on the celebration said: " This kind of governance depends largely on competent and morally upright leadership, Our holy books, the Qur'an and the Bible, in Surah XX11, Al-Hajj, verse 41 and in the letter to the Roman Chapter 12-13, leadership in spiritual and moral matters in society is clearly a characteristic of responsive and responsible governance."
