KOICA boosts Guimaras' disaster preparedness

Guimaras (10 November) -- The Korea International Cooperating Agency (KOICA) will implement the Yeosu project in Guimaras to strengthen its disaster preparedness, response and risk reduction management, through a fund assistance of $170,000 covering a period of one year.

Guimaras Information Officer Leny Fible said Korean representatives Shin Dong-Young, Kim Young-So, Director, Organizing Committee for Yeosu Expo and Kim Sung-Gwi, Director, Korea Maritime Institute, were in Guimaras November 9, for the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with Guimaras, DENR and the PENRO.

Fible said the signing was also witnessed by the local officials from barangays and municipalities that will benefit from the project.

She said the project will facilitate the conduct of a province-wide assessment of physical, social, environmental and economic vulnerabilities as well as natural and man-made hazards existing there.

The project will also develop a comprehensive plan for disaster preparedness, response and risk management and to develop a project proposal on the implementation a comprehensive disaster management program of Guimaras.

Guimaras Governor Felipe hilan nava said the project will benefit the province such that it will help it identify risk areas so that they will be more aware and prepared should disaster, natural or manmade, strike their communities. (GuimarasPIO/PIA6/ESS) [top]
