Puerto Princesa City (10 November) -- In support of the national anti-dengue campaign, the soldiers of the different services of the Western Command (WESCOM) joined the "Anti-Dengue Awareness Fun Run" recently.

The fun run organized by Ganap Guardian Inc. aimed to raise the awareness of the community on the dangers of the dengue disease and, importantly, the how's of dengue prevention.

Soldiers from the Western Command; Naval Forces West (NFW); 570th Composite Tactical Wing (CTW); 8th Marine Battalion Landing Team (MBLT-8); Palawan CAA Administrative Unit, 59th Infantry Battalion of Philippine Army; and the 6th Civil Relations Group of CRSAFP raced with other participants from the Provincial Police Office (PPO) led by its director, P/SSupt Aurelio Trampe; the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary-District Palawan; the Provincial and City Health Office; PNP Maritime and several private individuals in a 3-kilometer, 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer run in the city.

The City Health Office also participated led by Dr. Dean Palanca who said that the awareness of the people and the community is a big step to the prevention of dengue. He also said that observing cleanliness and the 4S will ensure a dengue-free community.

After the fun race activity, the participants conducted an information drive in one of the poblacion barangays which was reported to have a number of dengue cases. The Western Command (WESCOM) contingent headed by Captain Abraham F Celzo PN, Chief of Staff of WESCOM said that it supports the activity and the mission of the Ganap Guardian.

WESCOM already conducted an information drive in October this year among its personnel about dengue and the ways to prevent and detect it. The information campaign was conducted as a response to the outbreak of dengue all over the country in the past months.

Other organizations who helped organized the fun run activity include the Malampaya Foundation, Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. and the Palawan Safe Riders Club. (PIA) [top]
