Volunteer barangay health worker cited

Manila (10 November) -- A volunteer barangay health worker (BHW) from Mandaluyong City was awarded as most outstanding in the recently concluded Barangay Health Worker ? National Capital Region (BHW-NCR) Annual Convention.

Myrna Gaite, president of the BHW Foundation-Mandaluyong City and volunteer of Barangay Mauway, bested other health workers in Metro Manila. She received a commendation from Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Abalos who also offered cash incentive.

Meanwhile, the city government of Mandaluyong also gave recognition to 18 volunteer barangay health workers in each of its barangay. Shirley Retuya, of Barangay Highway Hills, was cited as the most outstanding for the year 2010.

Dr. Pecos Camarines, head of the City Health Department of Mandaluyong City, lauded the volunteers for working without compensation.

"They assist health center personnel in barangays where they are located and we are thankful for their service," he added. (PIA-MMIO) [top]
